A Difficult Decision

This post expired on September 04, 2014.

Greetings All. I come to you today having made a difficult decision to end the CSA for this year. I will refund all the money in everyone’s accounts plus 1/3 of the administration fee.

There are two parts of this decision and I have weighed them carefully trying to find a solution, but it has become too difficult to take any other route. The first part is a personal, family issue. My mom, who lives in Buffalo NY, has suddenly come to a place in her life requiring frequent trips to visit and to help make life decisions. These trips need to be made on Mondays and Tuesdays which are the days I spend working on the CSA, leaving me few options on packing up the bags and working with the farmers.

The second part of the dilemma is the farmers themselves. Because several of the organic farmers I worked with and counted on last year have fallen by the wayside this year, it has already been a challenge. The very excellent farmers I have been working with this year, are all struggling mightely in these last several weeks with the extreme heat and lack of rain for over a month. Summer crops burned out early and fall crops struggled to establish without any rain. They have small amounts of produce, but not enough to support over 40 CSA members.

I send my sincere apologies to all of you who have committed to support the local farmers, and especially to those who have religiously ordered and enjoyed the produce week after week since the beginning of the season. I wish I could find another viable solution!

I will be sending out your refund checks in the next ten days or so. Thank you for all your support for buying healthy, sustainably grown food. I hope you can still find a way to hold the energy of the importance of local, sustainable growing and eating healthy, seasonal food.
Most Regretably,
Mary
